Smart Home May Soon Bring an Even Smarter AC

The concept of the “smart home” has become a reality for many Texans. But if one inventor has his way, it’s about to go a lot further.

Elon Musk, a guy some of you may have heard of who owns the futurist-friendly car company Tesla, has designs on reinventing the way we think about air conditioning. 

While smart homes of today allow you to control your thermostat from your phone, Musk sees a more energy efficient way for AC units to operate. 

Smart Home, Smarter AC

Musk appeared on a recent episode of the Joe Rogan podcast and discussed several ideas about artificial intelligence, his cars, and the future course of mankind. But it’s what he didn’t say that has many in the energy world buzzing. 

“I cannot answer questions about potential future products.” 

This one line was in response to a discussion Musk and Rogan had about where the air conditioning market could go from where it is now.

Musk’s company is famous for its electric cars. While Teslas haven’t quite made it into the mainstream — that is, a very small group of people are actually driving them — many believe their use will one day become widespread. 

Tesla already has the power to track its vehicles’ movements. That would place home heating and air units in a prime position to know when you’re leaving the house and when you’re coming home. 

In Musk’s mind, it would only take a few small tweaks to have an AC unit that “spoke” to the car and readied the house for your departure and arrival. 

Heating and Air on a Granular Level

But beyond this, Musk’s concept wouldn’t just “know” to heat and cool your home to the preferred temperatures. No, it would be able to tell which rooms of the house you’re most likely to use and isolate its energy output to those rooms. 

So, theoretically speaking, if the AC interfaces with your car, a typical day would look something like this. 

  • 7:15 a.m. — you leave for work, the AC shuts down.
  • 5:15 p.m. — you leave for home. It takes 45 minutes to get there and 30 minutes to cool your entire home to the temperature you prefer. The car then “signals” to the AC to start cooling 15 minutes into your drive. But, if you’re only going to use two rooms and it takes 10 minutes to cool them off simultaneously, then the AC would know to only dispense energy to those rooms. As a result, it wouldn’t have to start until you were 35 minutes into your drive. 
  • 6 p.m. — you’re home. The rest of the evening, the AC unit merely maintains the requested temperature in those two rooms while keeping the rest of the house — the part you’re not using — at higher temperatures. 

Musk’s coyness in his non-response indicates this could be more than a pipe dream but an actual product in development. But only time will tell.

Everything You Need to Know About R22 Freon and 410A Puron and 2020

The political environment has changed quite a bit since the current administration took the White House, but what hasn’t is the phase-out date for R22 freon set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). As things stand, on Jan. 1, 2020, this particular gas will no longer be tolerated, and homeowners will need to switch to a more environmentally-friendly solution to cool their homes.

This new solution — R-410A — goes by several names. One of the most popular trademarks is Puron. In the following article, we’ll use these terms interchangeably. We’ll also examine the differences between Puron and Freon, so you’ll know what to expect leading up to the 2020 deadline. Let’s begin! 

Why Is R22 Freon Being Banned? 

R22 freon was banned effective Jan. 1, 2015 with a five-year phase-out period. That means starting on Jan. 1, 2020, it will not only be inefficient to have your AC unit serviced or maintained using it, it will be illegal. 

Why did the EPA take this action? As it turns out, R22 has two things working against it. For starters, it is considered an ozone-depleting gas, though not to the extent of CFC-11 and CFC-12, its predecessors. That said, it’s also considered a greenhouse gas with an 1810 potential for global warming (i.e., it is 1810 times more powerful than carbon dioxide). 

The Obama administration’s EPA took steps to ban R22 for these reasons, but they also understood an immediate transition would be expensive, unpopular with the public, and, quite frankly, unrealistic, since so many air conditioners still functioned on it. The Trump administration has taken many steps to roll back Obama-era regulations, particularly EPA-related items like the Waters of the United States (WOTUS) rule, but thus far, the freon ban has survived. 

Is Puron a Better Solution? 

R-410A was initially created in the early 1990s by the former Allied Signal (Honeywell). By 1991, scientists had a clearer understanding of the long-term dangers of ozone depletion and greenhouse gases, so manufacturers poured their resources into improving the profiles of the gases used to cool homes. Puron was identified as a healthy alternative with no risks for ozone depletion, thus providing additional protection from the sun’s rays over R22. 

That said, it’s still considered a potential contributor to global warming with a carbon dioxide multiplying factor of 1700 — lower than the previously mentioned 1810, but not without its share of negatives. That said, phasing out freon and doing a full replacement with R-410A greatly reduces power consumption and the overall environmental impact of AC units while generating a higher seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) number. The better the SEER number, the more annual savings a homeowner can enjoy from their energy usage.

So What Are the Drawbacks? 

Ultimately, switching to Puron is a net positive, though it may not feel that way at first. For those upset by the change to R-410A, there are two common complaints: 

  • Higher upfront cost: When the EPA determined it would be phasing out freon, there were many older AC units among homeowners. That’s still the case. And because of the shortening time between now and 2020, there are millions who will have to replace their entire units in the next two years, regardless of how well the units are functioning. The extended notice helps somewhat but considering it can cost thousands of dollars for a full-scale replacement, it’s going to put a lot of cash-strapped families in a bind. Furthermore, the present potential for a trade war could lead to even higher prices for new unit replacements. The good news is that once you rip off the band-aid and get a new unit, the savings begin to roll in through reduced energy consumption. It will take some time, but it’s an investment that eventually pays for itself.
  • A compulsion to buy: This is a particularly annoying drawback in Texas, where we pride ourselves on individualism and independence. We don’t like being told what to do with our money. However, it’s a little easier to swallow when you know you’re helping the environment. And even if the environment isn’t enough for you, most of us are drawn to the saving money part. 

Despite the drawbacks, Puron is a wise investment in your home and the environment. It’s just one that you’ll need to prepare for mentally and financially.

The Hottest Climates in the World

Seemingly intense heat can be found in areas across the globe. If you were to ask anyone who lives in the southern half of North America where the hottest place on the globe was, they would surely tell you that it is in their backyard during July. As hot as some places may seem, a mere 95-100 degrees would be a cool day in Death Valley, CA. If you were to visit the following four places on the map, it would be wise to stay indoors.

1. Death Valley, California, United States: The infamously hot Death Valley is located in the Mojave desert in Eastern California. The valley’s basin-like shape traps hot air and creates an oven effect, which is the cause of the intense summer temperatures. The summer season is seemingly year-round, but the hottest temperatures, (110-134 degrees Fahrenheit), are between May and September. Anyone who travels through Death Valley and expects to survive must have ample amounts of water on hand.

2. Dallol, Ethiopia: What was once a salt mining town has now become a desolate wasteland where few still travel, by camel, to collect salt. Dallol has an annual temperature of 96 degrees Fahrenheit. The summer season, between May and September, bring temperatures between 105-117 degrees Fahrenheit. When the town was inhabited, settlers built most buildings from salt blocks that were mined there.

3. Ghadames, Libya: Ghadames is an oasis town in the middle of Libya. With temperatures in the summer months reaching 130 degrees Fahrenheit, the people who currently live there are required to take several precautions to escape the heat. The houses are made of thick mud, roofs are connected, and streets are covered, all to avoid the blazing sun.

4. Kebili, Tunisia: Kebili is another oasis town located in south Tunisia. This town is known for its rich heritage, vacationing (no thank you!), and of course, its high temperatures. Kebili’s record high is 131 degrees Fahrenheit, and the average temperatures are not much cooler, ranking at around 110 degrees in the summer months of May through August. Records of inhabitants in Tunisia date back over 200,000 years, so many methods of keeping cool have been practiced and passed down from generation to generation. The most common method is keeping water stock-piled in order to stay hydrated.
