Why Is This Change Happening?

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is requiring HVAC manufacturers to phase out older refrigerants with high Global Warming Potential (GWP) as part of the American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act. This regulation is designed to reduce hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) emissions, similar to how the Montreal Protocol successfully phased out ozone-depleting chemicals in the 1990s.

Starting January 1, 2025, manufacturers must use refrigerants with a GWP of 700 or less, replacing R-410A with more environmentally friendly options.

What’s Changing in 2025?

The biggest shift is the phase-out of R-410A, the refrigerant used in most home air conditioning systems today. In its place, two new refrigerants will be introduced:

  • R-454B – The primary replacement for whole-home, ducted HVAC systems.
  • R-32 – A common refrigerant for ductless mini-split systems.

Both options provide strong cooling performance with a lower environmental impact, helping homeowners stay cool while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

What Happens to Existing Systems?

You can still use your system – There’s no requirement to replace your AC unit immediately.

Air conditioning hack number 1, turn your air up just a few degrees from 2-8 pm. A few degrees can make a big difference in the amount of energy you save. 2-8 pm are the hottest hours of the day and just by turning the thermostat a few degrees higher during these hours can save money on your energy and you can take it easy on your air conditioning unit that you ask so much of all summer long. This summer there is a shortage of a few very important air conditioning parts. Silicone and ball valves are two small but important parts of the machine, and both have had their moments of extremely limited supply. 

The limited supply of specific parts has slowed down the repair time for some air conditioning units. This is why it is important to save energy and strategize this summer. You don’t want to deal with a broken air conditioning unit in a time of low supply and high heat.

Strategize Dinner
